Kven people in Trondheim

Kväänit Tronjamissa // Kvener i Trondheim

The project consinsted of a series of portraits showcasing some of the Kven people in Trondheim and their unique stories. This exhibition highlights the Kven identity and provide a deeper understanding of Kven culture, history, and contemporary presence.
Each portrait serves as a visual narrative, offering a glimpse into these peoples’ lives and experiences. Their own words, paired with each photograph, extend the storytelling beyond the visual. In this way, their voices shape the message and add personal depth to the photographs.

When I moved to Norway 18 years ago and first heard about the Kven people, I was immediately fascinated and eager to learn more about their culture. This exhibition has provided a wonderful opportunity to deepen my understanding of the Kven people and their heritage through their unique stories.

My focus in this project and the presented exhibition was not on artistic expression but on conveying a message.
I aimed to highlight the stories, identity, and lived experiences of the Kven community in Trondheim. Photography became a tool for awareness, allowing visitors to engage with the realities of a people whose cultural heritage deserves greater recognition.

Many thanks to Norwegian Kvens Midt-Norge, all the participants, and especially to Vilde Christoffersen Walsø for her support and assistance in carrying out this exhibition.”

The project and exhibition was funded by the Norwegian Kven Association – Ruijan Kvääniliitto, Trondheim Municipality, and through the volunteer work of photographer Evangelos Kalos.
