The bicycle mechanic / Bakklandet

"The Hands That Keep Us Moving"

In this photo series, I document the everyday life inside a bicycle mechanic’s workshop. Sykkelbua Bakklandet workshop is a quiet but vital space where wheels are mended, chains are tuned, and stories are shared over grease-stained benches. These images present the craft of bike repair and a profession that remains rooted in human skill, patience, and care.

In a time when automation and disposability have become the norm, the bicycle mechanic stands as a symbol of continuity. Like the blacksmiths, cobblers, and watchmakers, their work speaks to a slower rhythm of life, one that values repair over replacement, and connection over convenience. There are fewer of these workshops today, but their relevance is ever more pressing, especially in cities striving for sustainability and human-centered mobility.

Through these photographs, I hope to honour the people who keep our wheels turning, and to remind us that behind every functioning machine is a pair of skilled hands, part of a tradition worth preserving.
